My new sub box *build pics*
Since I only have a pair of 5 1/4" clarions up front right now, and my sub amp is in my g/f's car until I get her a 4 channel amp to run everything, I decided to make a new fiberglass box for a single one of my e8a's. It's going in the back passengers side corner above the jack, and it'll be running off the rear channels of my JL 300/4. Once I get my new front stage installed, and get my sub amp back, I'll be throwing my old box for the 3 8a's back in.
Fiberglass drying: Here's the mounting ring with the sub test fitted. The jasper circle jig makes it SO easy to cut out perfect circles. :) Here's the mold after the bottom edge was trimmed, and the base was glassed on. The mounting ring is propped up to give an idea of how it will be mounted. I ran out of resin today, So tommorow I'll be laying down another layer or two of fiberglass mat on the mold, then the ring will get mounted and the front will get glassed. |
Re: My new sub box
Yay. I still get the 1st pics.

Re: My new sub box
Cool; I have to do something with my JL 10" W7. It's in a professionally-built sealed box, but it just floats around in the back on turns or hard braking, and takes up lots of room.

Re: My new sub box
thats the only way to put a sub in a Z, with a custom sub enclosure.

Re: My new sub box
I wish I could fiberglass like that.

Re: My new sub box

Of course. It'd only be fair, since, well you know ;) Quote:
It's really not that hard. The only tricky thing is getting the first layer of mat to stay in place while you soak it with resin. This particular mold was a bit tricky since the back is well, upside down, but it actually went pretty smoothly. Have you read my "how-to" on fiberglassing over on 3zc? I've got about a dozen pictures so far for this box build-up, and I'll be adding them to my other "how-to". Hopefully this time I'll be able to make it more clear. |
Re: My new sub box
Yay. Another how-to thread coming up. Woot-woot.

More like an addition to the current one to keep everything in one place. Maybe I'll start a general "how to fiberglass" thread here to cover various fiberglass projects from boxes to kickpanels to modifying door panels(for some special midbasses;)) Quote:
Says the man who's been here over a year less, and has 35 more posts :P And yea, I need an avatar for here. Got any ideas dustin? |

Re: My new sub box
Worked on it some more sunday morning. I decided to reposition the monting ring a bit, so tonight I might do that then stretch cloth around the front.
Finished glassing the mold Ring mounted: plenty of clearance:) Test fit in hatch. The top edge just clears, so I think I may move it a bit And the mold trimmed up. I just need to round the corners over a bit to make it look nicer |
Re: My new sub box
Like I said it looks like it's gonna beat the shit out of your rear hatch.
